[Abstract]

This presentation covers cost effective and portable lab-on-a-chip and biosensor approaches for on-site detection and analysis.  On-site detection of pollutants and pathogens is highly desired for environmental and biomedical sensing applications.  One of the challenges in off-the-bench detection is handling and manipulation of liquid samples without using bulky syringe or peristaltic pumps.  This presentation will briefly review and discuss recent developments on passive liquid control schemes for lab-on-a-chip and on-site sensing applications.  Simple and reliable detection is another challenge in field-deployable settings, in particular, where benchtop microscopes or analytical systems are not applicable.  Handheld or minimally instrumented options for such platform will be presented including colorimetric, fluorescent, and electrochemical detection.  Other key challenges in practical applications of lab-on-a-chip and biosensing platforms will also be reviewed and discussed.
