Nitrogen-containing fused heterocycles are key components of a wide variety of important synthetic pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, biochemical fluorescent probes, and electronic materials. Consequently, a significant level of interest exists in developing efficient methods for the synthesis of substituted derivatives of these N-heterocycles.
       In this presentation, a direct method for arylation of 1,2-azolo[1,5-a]pyridines will be discussed.1 The fused pyridines react with aryl halides in the presence of Pd(OAc)2(Phen) as a catalyst and CuCl as a Lewis acid to form arylated derivatives. And a sequential C-3 arylation was accomplished through a two-step sequence involving hydrolysis of pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine-3-carboxylate followed by the bimetallic Pd/Cu-catalyzed decarboxylative coupling reaction with aryl bromide. In the second part, a Cu(I)-catalyzed tandem cyclization/alkynylation of propargylic amines will be presented.2 This synthetic method provides rapid access to functionalized pyrrolo-fused heterocycle derivatives under mild reaction conditions. Some of fused N-heterocycles were utilized as backbone of nonclassical NHC ligands for transition metals.3-5 We demonstrated these NHC ligands showed acceleration effect on catalysis.
