The main focuses lie on the issues involved with the production of valuable chemicals from gases. Natural gas including shale gas, greenhouse gas, off-gases and byproduct gases from steelmakers and chemical industry are regarded as abundant and important reactants. Methane, one of the main components, can be catalytically or non-catalytically converted into final chemicals such as olefins, aromatics, alcohols, synthetic fuels, electricity and so on. These kinds of technologies are called C1 gas refinery. In the first step of my research project, a methane activation is carried out to produce C2 chemicals such as acetylene, ethylene, and ethane by using a dielectric barrier discharge plasma bed. This plasma bed is characterized by low temperature and ambient pressure, and can be used with or without catalyst bed. Through this method, methane conversion ranges up to 50 % and the selectivity of C2 chemicals is observed over 60%. Next, these intermediates of C2 chemicals are further converted over hierarchical zeolite catalysts into more valuable products such as aromatic compounds.

In addition, we are also carrying out an indirect conversion of methane, which is characterized by generation of syngas and synthesis of final chemicals. One of the most important technologies is a gas-to-liquids (GTL). In this, highly porous material-supported nickel-, cobalt-, or iron-based catalysts are widely used. For better dispersion and reduction properties, new nanostructured catalysts are still being developed and optimized for GTL.
